Wasp Paper Sculpture
Nesting
A quarantine and retirement influenced series. Deconstructed and reconfigured paper wasp nests with random household objects. Wasps are nature's paper-makers. They are resourceful and amazing creatures! They search out and find the perfect spot for their homes out of the weather then spend their days collecting wood pulp to be masticated and made into fine paper sheets welded together into cells for their young, and an outer covering to keep out the wind and cold. The striations of color are a result of the differing wood types their pulp comes from. I find it simply amazing that the wasps made their nests from wood pulp gathered from my studio and home... Then I harvested the nests and reused the paper to create this series. it's all cyclical. |
