One of the reasons I love the Writer's Almanac is learning about these people whom I have known in a sense, by virture of having read their books... learning a bit more of their history, what drove them, their failures ,and successes...
Robert Pirsig wrote: "The place to improve the world is first in one's own heart and head and hands, and then work outward from there. Other people can talk about how to expand the destiny of mankind. I just want to talk about how to fix a motorcycle. I think that what I have to say has more lasting value."

"An artist is always alone - if he is an artist. No, what the artist needs is
loneliness." Henry Miller. I agree, but might change loneliness to solitude... the best response to this came from my friend Christine in Thailand: "don't fall for it Laura, artists are visionaries passing on a moment or feeling. Miller loved to be alienated and detached. Be in the world and of it and share your gifts and create in every moment of your being. No need to go away into the cave to make art. time with yourself is lovely, go within for the real safely and serenity and source to create...illuminate!" |
