The Power of Ten

How do we fill and define space?
Can a thought fill space, or a sound, an action, a concept?
My challenge to myself for this exhibition was to look at these questions, and bring about some understanding through manipulation of materials.
The imposed limitations also play an important part in how this body of work came about. First, having a size restriction of 10x10x10 and secondly my own limitation of media: Both of which are repurposed: the lathe from a friend’s home renovations, the piano wire from an unused, un-tunable piano.
I am in love with these materials; with their age and history, their specificity, their unique color and texture. The encaustic element provides the defining vehicle which moves them in the direction of the concept via the colors, patterns, and surface treatment chosen for each specific piece.
The resulting body of work, after my experimenting and manipulations, virtually popped up on shore so to speak. The coastal expressions were unmistakable.
